Mission Statement

‘Barrow Amateur Swimming Club aims to be recognised as a swimming club which helps athletes achieve their personal goals in competitive swimming by improving their swimming skills and fitness and by providing regular competition opportunities at all levels.

To achieve this we will ensure that all athletes have personal goals within a structured program led by qualified coaches and teachers.

The club aims to provide an atmosphere where swimming is a safe, enjoyable and sociable experience.’

Update

April & May saw the Diddy League team compete against the cream of Cumbrian 9-11 year old swimmers in the two qualifying rounds of the competition. Round 1 saw the team finish a brilliant 3rd behind Kendal & Ulverston, this also put the team 3rd in the overall standings. Another excellent performance in round 2 saw the team finish 2nd again behind Kendal and their overall aggregate score put them in the top six teams.

So step 1 achieved entry to the ‘A’ final to be held at Kendal on Saturday 30th June & if the team can produce another performance like their first two then we should be challenging for the title.

April also saw the club stage another successful Club Champs gala, congratulations to all top 3 finishers & thanks must go to all those involved in the organisation of this event & all you supporters.

A number of BASC swimmers attended two invitational events during April, the Harrogate Distance Meet & the 13th CW&M Griffin Gala at Whitehaven. At the Harrogate Distance Meet a high standard of competition was experienced but strong performances from all the swimmers involved resulted in some excellent PBs.

The Griffin Gala hosted by Copeland ASC was an even better success with a host of medals/ribbons claimed by an enthusiastic BASC squad.

Into May & it was the turn of the older swimmers to show what they can do as part of a team as BASC hosted the first round of the Sprint League. An excellent team effort from the swimmers, coaches & volunteers ensured a very successful meeting and the team finished a creditable 5th, Well Done.

Also in May a small band of BASC swimmers attended the Manchester Open hosted by the Manchester Aquatics Swimming Club, another successful meeting produced medals and PBs, the only downside being a long train journey home, fortunately there was a good supply of PIMMS to pass the time.

Finally at the end of May during the Bank Holiday weekend a number of BASC swimmers are due to represent Cumbria ASA at Blackpool, hopefully some excellent performances can help Cumbria ASA achieve success.

What’s coming up!

ASA North West Region Age Groups

Following success in the Cumbria Region Age Groups the qualifying swimmers now move forward to the North West Region Age Groups held at the Manchester Aquatic Centre over two weekends in June. The standard will obviously be higher than the Cumbria Age Groups but the swimmers and coaches are confident good results can be achieved. Good luck to all those qualifying for swims.

Sprint League Round 2

The second round of the Sprint League is to be held during early July at Carlisle and the team are confident they can carry their good form and build on their 5th place in Round 1.

Presentation Evening

Friday 6th of July is the proposed date for the first of two BASC Presentation Nights to be held at BAE Sports and Social Club. Presentation nights are a really enjoyable family evening and give an opportunity to socialise away from the pool. All those who have won medals and trophies at the BASC Club Championships will be presented on the night. So check the noticeboard for ticket details and those swimmers who have trophies from last year please could you return to Cliff or Jane Blain or any of the coaching staff as soon as possible.

World Youth Friendly Games

BASC have been invited to attend the World Youth Friendship Games as a representative of Great Britain. A small team of swimmers will be jetting to Holland for 4 days of competition against similar clubs from all over the world. Some of the world super powers in swimming including Australia and USA attend this unique event and although the competition will be strong with a bit of luck the swimmers can bring back a medal or two.

Finally if you are having trouble remembering your coaches names then check out the photographs on the club noticeboard, it’s a real ‘Rogues Gallery’.

Well that’s it for this edition hopefully next time we will reporting more BASC success in the Sprint & Diddy Leagues, a report on Cumbria ASA and an enjoyable presentation night.

Next edition of BASC News due out in July 07, any suggestions for future content of this newsletter are greatly appreciated or if you would prefer to receive this electronically please email dave.kerry@talktalk.net.
