LOCAL SWIMMERS SUCCESS AT OPEN WATER CHAMPIONSHIP!
On Sunday 5th July two Barrow Amateur Swimming Club members, Curtis Corrie 15yrs and Andrew Kerr 14yrs enjoyed success at the ASA North West Regional Open Water Swimming Championships. The event held at Salford Quays, Manchester, saw them compete against other swimmers from across the North West. It was Andrews’ first experience of open water racing, competing in the 500m novice race. Andrew swam a very strong race and finished in a creditable 3rd position. For Curtis, who is currently on the ASA Open Water Talent Programme, this was valuable race experience. He competed in the junior 1500m race. After settling in the pack for the first 500m lap, he proved his strength and talent over the next two laps to pull away and finish in 1st position. Both swimmers enjoyed the experience and commented that the “Open water environment made a welcome change from the swimming pool, even if the temperature was somewhat cooler!” Barrow ASC Head Coach, Neil Kerr said, “This was great effort from both swimmers in difficult conditions. There was a strong head wind in the finishing straight making the water quite choppy. I’d like to thank Swim North West for giving the swimmers the opportunity to compete in such an event.” |

Jamie’s just splashing in the pool YOUNG swimmer Jamie Warriner has added to his ever-increasing medal haul in the pool at the Disability Swimming Junior Nationals.
Jamie collected two bronze medals in 2009, but beat that display hands down with his five-medal haul this time round. Representing the North West at the huge Ponds Forge pool, his weekend started with the breaststroke leg of the 4x100m medley relay, with the team coming home first in a British record time of 5 minutes 45.48 seconds to claim gold. More than 200 swimmers took part in the competition with seven UK regions and guest team Greece all in the pool. Great Britain Paralympians Ellie Simmonds, Sasha Kindred and Sam Hynd all competed for their respective regions and Jamie took inspiration from their taking part. The Yarlside Primary School pupil, who has no ulna in his right forearm and is also missing several metacarpal bones in his right hand, went on win gold in the 100m butterfly (S10) and silvers in the 100m individual medley (SM10), 100m breaststroke (SB9) and 50m breaststroke (SB9). Last year, Jamie was invited onto the British Swimming Home Nations Talent Development Programme and he will continue to attend the disability master class sessions organised by British swimming. He is also being considered for the Disability Swimming World Class Talent Programme, which is the next level up. Jamie would like to thank all the coaches and poolside helpers at Barrow ASC for their support at training. Published by http://www.nwemail.co.uk |
