Four Points from Victory
Barrow Swimming Club took part in the Grand Final of the
Cumbria Diddy League at Carlisle
on Sunday 30th September 2007. The event featured swimmers aged 9 to
12 years. This was the culmination of three previous rounds, with the top six
clubs in the county taking part. The other clubs competing in the event were
the City of Carlisle,
Copeland, Kendal, Ulverston and Workington. The event
was keenly contested throughout. From the start City of Carlisle took the lead with the other clubs
chasing hard. The Barrow team produced some fine performances in both the
individual and relay events to push the Carlisle
team all the way. Barrow swimmers achieved 10 outright wins from the 43 events.
The Barrow swimmers also achieved a massive 57 new personnel best times between
them. When the final points were added up Barrow, 190 pts, finished in second
place only 4 points behind City of Carlisle 194, with Kendal 163 pts third and Ulverston 157 pts fourth.
To great applause and cheers from their team mates and the spectators,
including the Barrow mums with their red and black pom
poms, the Diddy League
captains, Andrew Kerr and Rebecca Reid, received the second place trophy. This was an excellent result for the Barrow
team. Great credit must go to all of the swimmers and the coaches for the hard
work and dedication that they have put in this year to achieve the clubs best
ever finish in this event. The club would also like to thank Peter McDowell
from Barrow Central Joinery Ltd, for supplying red hoodies
to the swimmers and polo shirts to the coaches.
